Resonance is energy. A machine can use local fuel from its chest, or get resonance through an amethyst network. The generator makes energy, and the battery holds what is left over. The glass gauge shows the visible stored amount. Fuel that would overfill the visible gauge is saved as paid credit and used later; a lava bucket is not wasted because a gauge is almost full.
Default local fuel values are 25 for wood, 150 for coal or charcoal, 50 for a dried kelp block, 250 for a blaze rod, and 500 for a lava bucket. The generator gives twice those amounts by default. Server owners can change these values. Lava returns an empty bucket.
To connect two amethyst blocks, attach a full amethyst cluster to an exposed face at each end. Point the clusters at each other, sideways, up, or down, across a clear, loaded line with no more than 16 air blocks between them. The purple glass line and small particle show a working connection.
amethyst block — crystal → clear gap, up to 16 air blocks ← crystal — amethyst block
Since beta.10, amethyst blocks joined face to face carry energy in every direction, so a solid run can also connect machines without a crystal gap. Attach a crystal to any exposed block on the run, including an extension above or below a machine. Do not replace a required machine block to make room for it.

Turn a connection on or off
A crystal works without redstone by default. Attach a lever or button to its supporting amethyst block, or power that block from adjacent redstone, to control it. When a control exists and is off, every crystal on that support is disabled and its purple line disappears. Turn the signal on and the saved connection returns. This is separate from the machine's front start/stop lever.

If a line is missing, check that both clusters face each other, the gap is clear and short enough, the support is enabled, and the area is loaded. A disconnected machine can still use fuel in its own chest.
